The Altai Republic is contiguous with three countries - Mongolia , China and Kazakhstan , as well as with three areas of Russia - Altai Territory , Tuva Republic and Kemerovo region. So, the Altai Republic is situated in the very heart of Eurasia .

Not without reason, one can call this territory as a natural-cultural reserve, which has no analogues. At the present moment, a specially protected territories and natural complexes with an area of almost 22% of the whole Republic's territory are distinguished in the Altai Republic .

A specially protected territories are presented with two preserves (The Altai and The Katun Preserves), with five reserves (The Tcherginsky, Sumultinsky, Kosh-Agachsky, Turochaksky, Shavlinsky), “a Zone of Peace "Ukok"” and The Natural Park " Belukha ".

126 memorials of nature including 44 of the Republican significance belong to specially protected territories and natural objects.

Lakes: Teletskoye, Manzherokskoye, Tenginskoye, Akkemskoye, Kucherlinskoye, Taimenskoye, Sadrinskoye, Karakolskiye, Multinskiye, Tuyukskiye.

We are proud that our republic has world heritage objects, these are the highest mountain in the Asian part of Russia - Belukha, worldwide known Teletskoe Lake, Ukok Plato with its unique historical monuments and Katunsky Reserve. Here two great Siberian rivers Katun and Biya are originated from. In a short word the Altai Republic is a natural reserve as itself.

On the other hand, gluts of wealth can be found in the depths of the Altai republic: precious metals, scarce minerals, iron ore, quicksilver and coal. Republic is very rich of its forests, the purest natural water reservoirs, various flora and fauna.
