GENERAL INFORMATION

The preliminary population quantity constituted 205,5 thousand people (according to the data of 2001.01.01), 53,1 among them - urban population living in the city of Gorno-Altaisk, and 152,4 thousand people - rural inhabitants.
Distribution of population o要 the Republic's territory is not even. Thus, about 50% of population live o要 the territory of Gorno-Altaisk, Maiminsky and Shebalinsky Regions, constituting o要ly 9% of the Republic's area.

National composition of the population structure of the Altai Republic is extremely diverse. Here live more than 100 nationalities and nations. The most part of the population - 60% - are the Russians. The Altaians are indigenous population and are presented as a totality of small Turkic peoples: the Teleuts, the Telengits, the Altai-Kizhi, the Kumandins, the Tchalkans, the Shorts, the Tubalars. The number of the Altaians is about 60 thousand people or about 30% of the total population of the Republic.
Old-believers also live in Altai. They are considered indigenous population, although mainly they are representatives of Russian religious and communal structures having moved to the Republic's territory more than 200 years ago.
The Kazakhs constitute about 6% of the population and keep to the national and cultural traditions. The rest part consists of the Ukrainians, the Germans, the Letts, the Estonians and other nations and constitutes about 3%

NATURAL MIGRATION OF POPULATION

During the period of January-December, 2000 natural increase of population took place in the Republic. The number of those born has exceeded the number of those died by 245 people.
During the period of January-December, 2000 there were registered 128 new-born children more (or 4.7% more) than for the same period of the previous year.
Infant mortality has decreased. During the period of January-December, 2000, 68 children up to o要e year died, during the same period of 1999 the number was 79. Indices of infant mortality (the number of those died at the age up to o要e year per 1000 of born children) constitute correspondingly 23.6 and 28.5. The following reasons of infants mortality prevail: conditions appearing during the period starting with 28 weeks of pregnancy, including birth and first seven days of infant's life, and innate anomalies, i.e. diseases closely connected with mother's health.
Directions of population migration movements observed during the recent years are the same in January-December, 2000. Migratory increase of the Republic's population during 11 months of 2000 compared to the same period of the previous year has decreased by 97 people (16%).
According to data of Migration Service, the number of forced migrants, registered in 2000 equaled 318 people (174 people during the same period of 1999). The amount of the Russians constitutes 49%. The greatest part of forced migrants has come to the Republic from Kazakhstan - 240, Uzbekistan - 25 and the Chechen Republic - 16 people.

EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT

The number of economically active population by the end of the year 2000 equaled 91.2 thousand people or 44.8% of the total number of constant population of the Republic, 72.7 thousand of economically active population (or 79.7%) were engaged in economy and 18.5 thousand people didn't work, but were actively looking for a job (according to methodology of International Labor Organization they are classified as unemployed).
Women took 65.7% of the number of registered unemployed, youth at the age of 16-29 - 39.7%, invalids - 0.7%.
48.5 thousand people (or 66.7%) of population engaged in economy in November 2000 were permanent employees of large and medium enterprises and organizations (not taking pluralists into account). 2.5 thousand people more were enlisted the services at these enterprises o要 condition of pluralism and by contracts (in equivalent of full employment).

INCOME AND EXPENSES OF POPULATION

In 2000 volume of total income of the Altai Republic population increased in 1.4 (140.1%) as compared to 1999, while total expenses increased in 1.47 (147.6%). Growth of total income increased over expenses constituted 127.8%.
Correspondingly, in 2000 the average income per head constituted 14409 rubles, and expenses - 9460 rubles.
Decrease of cash financial resources o要 hand in the structure of income use is observed compared to the period of January-December, 1999 and the share of financial resources used for goods and services purchasing and for obligatory payments and fees.
In 2000 purchasing power of income per head increased for all food products except flour. o要 the other hand, urchasing power for petrol, fee for hot water-supply and heating has decreased.
The quantity of living wage per head in December, 2000 equaled 1019 rubles and increased by 4.6% in comparison with December of the previous year.
The number of inhabitants with the income less than the quantity of living wage in the period of January-December constituted 101.77 thousand people (or 49.9% of the general number of population).
