There is o要e university, 5 secondary special institutions, 7 professional educational institutions and 205 general education institutions in the Republic. Over 40 thousand students study and more than 4 200 teachers work in these institutions.
Gorno-Altaisk University was established in 1993 o要 the basis of Pedagogical Institute. In 1999 this educational institution celebrated its 50th anniversary. There are 199 students for each 10 thousand people of population, which exceeds the correspondent numbers of neighboring regions - Tyva Republic, Khakass Republic, Altai Region, Tyumen Oblast, Krasnoyarsk Region.

Established in 1993 o要 the basis of Pedagogical Institute.
About 3 500 day-time students, as well as 1 800 of external students study at 18 specialities. 370 teachers work at 30 departments, 38 of them are Doctors and Professors, 137 - are Candidates and Assistant Professors. 6 Candidates for a doctor's degree and 3 research workers work o要 doctoral theses. There was established a Post-Graduate Department, where there are 53 post-graduate students and 18 specialities. 7 doctoral and 36 master's theses have been defended during last 5 years.
Structural subdivisions, basic for students' industrial and educational practicals, research work and entrepreneurial activity function in the University. These are: scientific, educational and industrial unit "Biryulyovskoye", agrobiostation, veterinary clinic. There also function several museums - Museum of Regional Studies, Zoological and Archeological Museums, Republican chemical and ecological laboratory of scientific research, educational sport center o要 the Teletskoye Lake, etc.
The University's own printing-house prints not o要ly educational, methodical and scientific works of teachers, students and post-graduate students, but also takes orders from the Ministry Of Science And Education of the Altai Republic, from schools and other clients.
The actively functioning University's Sport and Tourist clubs (the latter being called "Horizon") are the clubs of rich traditio
ns. A large number of sportsmen, instructors and guides in the sphere of ecological tourism, as well as specialists of lifeguard services have been trained in these clubs.
The University's computer base is being constantly enriched and renovated. A New Informational Technologies Center has been created; there are 9 computer classes in the university, local nets are being created.
SECONDARY SPECIAL AND VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL SCHOOLS
Gorno-Altaisk Pedagogical College (GAPC)

Established in 1928. There are 4 departments: pre-school teachers, elementary school teachers, physical training teachers, foreign languages teachers of elementary school. There are over 800 students, 53 teachers, including 1 Doctor, 12 Candidates, 4 Honored Teachers and 21 teachers of the Highest Grade.
Altai Technological Secondary School of Service (ATSSS)

Established in 1955. There are 850 students, including 650 of those studying at day-time department. 35 teachers work at ATSSS. Students are trained for the following specialities: economics, book-keeping and control; technical operation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electromechanical equipment; technical maintenance and repair of radio electronical equipment; clothes modelling and designing, garment manufacture; manufacture of fur and sheepskin articles.
Gorno-Altaisk Economics Technical Secondary School of the Republican Consumers' Society (Gorno-Altaisk ETSSRC)
