WWF ACTIVITY IN ALTAI-SAYAN ECOREGION

World Wild Nature Fund (WWF) - is the largest nongovernmental international nature-protecting organization in the world, which combines 26 national departments around the world. In 1998 WWF specialists determined over 200 ecological regions (ecoregions) most important for preservation of wild nature diversity on the Earth. Altai-Sayan mountainous land is one of such ecoregions.
Altai-Sayan ecoregion covers an area of some 845 thousand square km and stretches through the boundaries of four countries - Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China. The Republics of Altai, Tyva and Khakass are paid the special attention within the framework of the project on the territory of the Russian Federation.
Altai-Sayan ecoregion is famous for variety of wild flora and fauna species. Altai and Sayan are the habitat for such rarest species as snow leopard and mountain ram. Unique natural value, beauty and richness of landscape, biological and cultural diversity of the region deserve the special protection. Protection of this really unique place is one of the prior tasks of WWF activity.
The main goals and objectives of WWF activity in Altai-Sayan ecoregion are: - To create the system of protected natural territories (PNT) in order to preserve biological diversity of Altai-Sayan ecoregion;
- To contribute to recognition of Altai-Sayan ecoregion as the region of global ecological significance; - To create the conditions and work out the structure for long-term preservation of biovariety in Altai-Sayan ecoregion; - To develop the models and show the possibilities of stable ecoregion development by means of: - contribution to working-out of ecoregion stable development strategy - contribution to stable forest management - development of ecologically safe tourism - contribution to stable use of pasturable resources - development of ecologically stable small business - prevention of ecologically dangerous use of mineral resources. Trying to solve global nature-protecting problems in the most efficient way, WWF aims at co-operation with other public organizations, governments, business circles and the public at large.
