Valery I. Tchaptynov (1945-1997) - was a prominent statesman and political figure, the first Head of the Altai Republic, Chairman of State Assembly - El Kurultai of RA, Chairman of the RA Government. The Altai Republic was established during his governing. He was the first Member of the Federation Council from the Altai Republic.
Sazon S. Surazakov (1925-1995) - was Ph.D. of philology. His main scientific works are: "Folklore", "Altai Heroic Epos", "Altai Folklore" (the Altaian language), "Altaian Literature". He was an author and editor of 10 volumes of the series "Altai Baatyrlar" and a researcher of folk epos "Maadai Kara". He was a founder of Gorno-Altaisk Institute of Humanitarian Researchs.
Alexei G. Kalkin (1925-1998) - a folk narrator of the Altai Republic. He is o要e of the most distinguished persons of the Republic, he was the first who was given the title of "Folk narrator-kaichi of the Altai Republic" for his unique guttural singing of Altai folk legends, especially of heroic epos "Maadai Kara". In 1978 he was admitted to Writers' Union of the USSR, in 1995 - awarded with Order of Friendship.
Grigory I. Tchoros-Gurkin (1870-1937) - a prominent artist, the author of such famous pictures as "Khan Altai", "The Katun Crown", "The Lake of Mountain Spirits", etc. His works are regularly exhibited in the halls of the Republican Museum named after A.V.Anokhin.
Nikolay I. Tchevalkov (1892-1936) - an original painter of Gorny Altai, whose pictures produce great impression o要 spectators. The most famous of them are "Savage-Girl's Dream", "Shepherd", "Bazaar".
Alexander M. Akpashev (year of birth -1925) - War and Labor veteran. In January, 1943 was mobilized to the Soviet Army. He is awarded with two Orders of Glory, Order of the Red Star, Medal for Prague Liberation, Medal for Berlin Seizure and many others.
Augusta P. Belikova (year of birth 1941) - the Head of Pedagogics sub-faculty of Gorno-Altaisk State University, professor, Ph.D. of pedagogical sciences. In 1974 defended Candidate thesis o要 the history of Siberia formation, and in 1995 - defended Doctor's thesis. She wrote over 100 scientific works.
Sergei S. Katash (year of birth 1925) - professor of Gorno-Altaisk State University and Biysk State Pedagogical Institute. Since 1962 he has been working as a lecturer, assistant professor, Head of sub-faculty, Dean, acting for Rector of Pedagogical Institute. In 1972 was admitted to Writers' Union of the USSR. He is a member of the group of authors "The History of Soviet Multinational Literature", a member of editorial board of Altai epos "Altai Baatyrlar".
He is awarded with Order of Friendship, UNESCO Gold Medal. He is given the title of Honored Art Worker. He is elected Corresponding Member of International Academy of Sciences of Pedagogical Education, a member of the Russian Turkologists Committee.
Ivan T. Nemtsev (year of birth 1942) - repeated Russia champion o要 dumb-bell sport. He has been going into this kind of sport for more than 30 years. He was the champion of Russia for 17 times and became the champion of the world among veterans not long ago. He won the title of the best in Russia in 1965 for the first time, in 1997 - for the last time, among veterans. In superheavy weight his records in the press, clean and jerk and triathlon total are still unsurpassed. His records in the press and triathlon total are put down to the history of Soviet sport forever. These records can't be broken, for competition rules were changed: the press was excluded and o要ly snatch was left.
Vyacheslav S. Torbokov (year of birth -1956) - is the Chairman of the Altai Republic Artists' Union. Since 1990 has been cooperating with book publishing house "Uch-Sumer". He designed and illustrated books of Altai writers, fairy-tales for children and school text-books. He works in such genres as thematic composition, portrait, landscape and still-life. Since 1991 he is a member of the Russian Artists' Union.
Ivan V. Shodoev (year of birth 1914) - War and Labor veteran, the member of the Russian Writers' Union. He's into serious literature activity. In 1958 his first book for children was published, in the whole 12 of his books were published in Gorno-Altaisk. The following historical novels of the writer: "At Dawn", "Terrible Years" got a special acknowledgement among the readers. The writer as a former front-line soldier was awarded with 4 Orders and 17 Medals for services in battle.
