MUNICIPAL INSTITUTIONS OF THE ALTAI REPUBLIC
The territory of the Republic consists of 11 municipal institutions, which combine 90 village administrations consisting of 248 settlements, the o要ly city is Gorno-Altaisk - the capital of the Altai Republic. The distance from Gorno-Altaisk to Moskow is 3641 km, from Gorno-Altaisk to Barnaul - 250 km, from Gorno-Altaisk to the nearest railway station (Biysk) - about 100 km.
 The territory of the Altai Republic is 92902 square km, that is 0.55 % of the whole territory of the Russian Federation. The territory contains: agricultural lands - 19%, forests - 47%, water space - 0.9% and other lands - 33.1%. The territory of the Republic stretches for more than 350 km from north to south and 400 km from east to west. It changes from lowlands to highlands, which causes sufficient differences in natural and economic complex of 10 regions of the Republic. A short review of territorial peculiarities of regions from north to south is given below. Additionally there are indices of different production types of various branches of national economy, which help to value potential and place of this branch in the Altai Republic.

The capital is situated in the North-Western part of the Republic, o要 the territory of municipal institution Maiminsky Region.
The territory of the city covers 91 square km. The capital of the Altai Republic has got the status of the city o要ly in 1928. Before that it was a settlement Ulala, founded in 1830.
The distance from Gorno-Altaisk to Moskow is 3641 km, to the nearest railway station - the city of Biysk - about 100 km.
The city population counts 53,1 thousand people (2001.01.01). Enterprises of the following branches of national economy are situated o要 the territory of the city: light, food, building materials, printing, machine-building and metal working.
Municipal Institution "Maiminsky Region"

Maima Municipal Institution "Maiminsky region" is situated in the South-Western part of the Altai Republic, its territory is 1285 square km. 24.5 thousand people live in 25 villages of the Region, which form 8 village Administrations. The Regional center - the village of Maima - was founded in 1810 and is situated o要 Tchuisky Highway along the banks of the Maima River, which flows into the Katun. The main types of production in the Region are: woodworking, dairy cattle husbandry, antler-deer-raising, poultry husbandry, hop growing, gardening, vegetable-growing, bee-keeping. Gross yield of hop in some years goes up to 25 tonnes and more, and production of maral antlers (preserved) - up to 1.4 tonnes, honey yield - up to 250 tonnes. The Region is rich in granite: porphyry and diorite, lime and expanded clay aggregate raw materials, construction sand and clay, forest resources.

Municipal Institution "Tchoisky Region" is situated in the Northern part of the Altai Republic, in lowlands, its territory is 4526 square km.
9.4 thousand people live in 21 village of the Region, which form 7 village Administrations.
A Regional center - the village of Tchoya founded in 1876. Indigenous population- the Tubalars, belonging to the Northern ethnic population of the Altaians - live compact o要 the territory of the Region. The main types of the Region's production are: gold mining, lumbering, wood-processing, bee-keeping, dairy cattle husbandry, gathering of medicinal and technical raw materials and fern.
The Region is rich in coniferous forests (firs, cedar), it may supply the market with merchantable wood, fir oil, cedar nut, moss, tar, peltry (sable, squirrel, etc.), mushrooms, medicinal herbs.
Gold, copper are mined by industrial method, reserves of basalt raw materials, wollastonite, specularite are prospected. There are also clay deposits - about 17 colors.
